Frequently Asked Question
What Documents Are Needed to Prove Qualifications for Drug Testing?
When learners complete drug and alcohol testing training, they receive a qualification certificate. To prove their eligibility to collect specimens for drug and alcohol testing, collectors must be ready to provide documentation to DOT agency inspectors, employers, and employer-designated service agents, including C/TPAs.
Qualification documentation should detail their initial training and proficiency demonstration. Examples include certificates and signed letters from the qualified trainer who conducted the mandatory mock collections, confirming that the collectors have completed initial proficiency and the mandatory mock collection as required by regulation 40.33(g).
To qualify for a DOT urine collector, you must complete a minimum of five mock collections. These mock collections should include the following scenarios:
- A routine collection.
- A collection with a refusal scenario.
- A collection with an employee requires a directly observed collection.
- A collection with a shy bladder situation.
- Any other scenario that might commonly occur during a urine collection process.
- Each mock collection must be performed under the supervision of a qualified instructor, who will ensure that you follow all proper procedures and demonstrate competency in handling each scenario.
Proper mock collections for drug and alcohol testing proves that learners have acquired the necessary skills to conduct accurate and reliable tests, and simulating the collection process enables trainees to practice and demonstrate proficiency in handling specimens, maintaining the chain of custody, and adhering to regulatory procedures.
