DOT Alcohol Screening Test Technicians (STTs) play a pivotal role in maintaining a drug- and alcohol-free workplace by measuring Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) for DOT-regulated employees.

**Please note that this course is not for those who plan to become a Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) using an evidential breath testing device (EBT Device) capable of screening and confirmation. Consider enrolling in the DOT Breath Alcohol Technician Training course.

This training course complies with the three training benchmarks required by federal regulation 49 CFR Part 40.213(a-c), including Basic Information Training, Qualification Training, and five Initial Proficiency Demonstrations.

Students learn independently with our comprehensive online training program that uses videos, documents, resources, and PowerPoint presentations. Also included at no extra charge are virtual Mock Demonstrations (Mocks) conducted by webcam. A certificate of completion can be downloaded immediately after passing the online exam.

DOT Alcohol Screening Test Technician Training (STT) FAQ

Qualification training based on the DOT Model STT Course, then five consecutive error-free mock tests under 49 CFR 40.213. Both must be completed before you conduct DOT screening tests.

An STT runs alcohol screening tests with an approved screening device. A result of 0.02 or higher must be confirmed by a BAT on an evidential breath testing device.

Yes. Training and mock tests must use the screening device you will use. If the device shows results by color change, you must show you can read it correctly. Our DOT Saliva Alcohol Testing Training for Alco Screen 02 covers one such device.

At least every five years. Refresher training must repeat the full qualification training and the five error-free mock tests.

Someone who has conducted DOT tests as an STT for at least a year, has trained STTs for at least a year, or has completed an STT train the trainer course.

The STT must complete error correction training within 30 days of being notified. It includes three error-free mock tests.

If you need to perform confirmation tests, yes. A BAT can confirm results and can also act as an STT after showing proficiency on the screening device. See DOT Breath Alcohol Technician Training.

No. The STT documents what happened and tells the DER. The employer makes the final refusal determination.
